Serving Christ Together

View the Ministry Handbook

The Lord has given all of His children a place of service. Our homes and our workplaces provide for us this God-given opportunity to serve as Christians in a Christ-like manner. Every day and in every place in which we live, each believer is to be wholeheartedly engaged in the ministry of the Lord. Think of the impact we can have on our community for Christ if we gather the Christian influence of our church in this way!

Our ministry is not to be limited to a day of the week or a certain location, any more than worship is to be limited to the days we attend church, or our witnessing limited to a time of organized visitation. To restrict the ministry of the Lord in such a way is to restrict the Christian life.

Our involvement in serving the Lord ought to come from our gratitude for all the Lord has done and continues to do for us. Our ministry to the Lord comes from the heart; it is not created or sustained by external pressure. It is a willing service that brings a deep joy and great satisfaction.

When we organize ministry opportunities and train people for more effective service, we do it to extend the Lord’s work. Specific ministries allow us to care for people, to give attention to areas of the Lord’s work that tend to be neglected or that need special emphasis and provide a measure of personal accountability. Although there is but one goal in ministry, the glory of God; there are many elements.

What are you willing to do in your ministry to the Lord?

Devotedly yours,

Ministries to Our Members

Deacons Ministry

The Bible teaches there are two offices in the local church: the pastor and the deacon. At Temple Baptist Church, the faithful men who serve as deacons stand with our Pastor as he, under the headship of Christ, leads this church. In accordance to biblical teaching, deacons must meet specific qualifications and proved themselves to be faithful, Spirit-filled men. Deacons serve on a rotating basis to help the Pastor care for fellow church members in a variety of ministries, provide leadership, offer advice and counsel to the Pastor, and to introduce new believers and members into the fellowship of the church.

Ushers Ministry

The faithful men who serve as ushers are eager to greet and assist visitors and members in finding a seat, locating loved ones, and many other needs. Ushers not only provide an important service to the congregation, but also assist the Pastor in a number of ways before, during, and after the service.

Greeters Ministry

A friendly hand shake and a warm smile greet visitors and members before each meeting of the church. Greeters also offer assistance in finding the nursery and appropriate Sunday School classes, and provide helpful information to those who are visiting with us for the first time.

Section Ministry

Greeters and hosts serve each seating section of the Auditorium, welcoming visitors and encouraging fellowship among those who regularly sit in their section. Members in each section pray for and encourage one another with phone calls, postcards, and visits.  Many section members commit to bring a family during the summer Christian Home Crusade and participate in house-to-house evangelism campaigns. Section fellowships are regularly held after the Sunday evening services during the summer and other times during the year.

Parking Attendants Ministry

Numbers of cars and buses move in and out of the Temple Baptist Church campus before and after each worship service. Parking attendants are in place before and after each service to help people find a parking place and to aid traffic flow as people leave the campus.

Nursery Ministry

Parents with children four years of age and under are encouraged to take advantage of the nursery and preschool. Our preschool ministry is staffed with caring workers who are trained to work with each age group. Beautiful nursery facilities are provided along with a pager system to alert parents in the event they are needed to attend to their children. In addition to receiving the careful attention of our workers, children will enjoy singing Bible songs and learning exciting Bible stories.

Newborn Ministry

A child is a gift from God and with that gift comes great parental responsibility. To help parents of newborns, our preschool workers provide assistance through visitation, prayer, and hospitality. The parents of each newborn receive a beautiful welcome basket filled with helpful gifts and a copy of Pastor Sexton’s book, Beginning with God. Parents also benefit from receiving meals prepared and delivered by caring friends. Our trained nursery workers will explain policies and procedures to reassure concerned parents and provide peace of mind. New parents also receive a copy of Pastor Sexton’s booklet, What It Means to Give A Child To God.

Sunday School Ministry

The greatest asset to any church is the uninterrupted preaching and teaching of the Word of God. The Sunday School exists to equip God’s people to reach others for Christ and to teach them God’s Word. Classes are offered for all ages and backgrounds.

Children’s Ministry

The children’s ministry is designed to help parents as they strive to bring up their children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Bible-teaching Sunday school classes, children’s choirs, children’s prayer meetings, Bible memory programs, summer camps, special outings and activities, and much more are planned to help children grow in their Christian lives to become the men and women God desires them to be.

Youth Ministry

The Youth Ministry exists to help mom and dad during the all-important teen years. A trained and committed married couple sponsors each grade level. Young people need more than entertainment; they need to be challenged to find their place in God’s will, wholeheartedly investing their lives in becoming true followers of Christ.

Faithful Men Ministry

The Faithful Men’s Ministry is a ministry to encourage men to faithfully follow Christ and lead their homes in serving the Lord. Fellowships and ministry activities are planned especially for men. The highlight of the year is the Faithful Men’s Revival held each January.

Galilean Ladies Ministry

Just as there were certain women of Galilee who ministered to our Lord’s needs when He was her on earth, so ladies are encouraged to follow and serve Christ and to influence other women to be faithful wives and mothers. Ladies participate in soul winning and visitation and many other church ministries.

Widows Ministry

Widows at the Temple Baptist Church are cared for in a variety of ways and are encouraged to serve the Lord with their lives. A monthly luncheon is served at a church member’s home where friends have an opportunity to fellowship with each other, share prayer requests, pray together, and spend time in God’s Word. The Pastor and church family greatly benefit from the wisdom and prayers of these godly saints. Daily needs are met through the efforts of the deacons and many church members who desire to help our widows with household chores, errands, and more.

Hospital Visitation

Each day our pastoral staff, deacons, and other members of the Temple Baptist Church visit the sick in local hospitals. Those who are ill receive comfort and strength through the reading of God’s Word and prayer as caring members sit at their bedside to encourage them and their families. Because recovering from an illness or recent hospital stay can be lengthy and trying, those recovering at home continue to receive visits. We encourage our members to call the Prayer Line, 938-PRAY, or go to www.templebaptistchurch.com for daily updates and prayer listings.

Bereavement Ministry

"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints." When death separates us from those we love, we grieve. The bereavement ministry exists to provide comfort and encouragement to families through visitation, prayer, and funeral assistance. Our ladies stand ready to prepare and deliver meals to families during those difficult days.

Stewardship Ministry

God’s has designed and commanded that His work be supported by the tithes and offerings of His people. Every Christian should practice tithing as a Bible conviction.  Listed below are various opportunities to support the work of the local church through giving.
Paying the tithe – Scripture tell us that the tithe is ten percent of our income. Tithing is not making a gift to God’s work, it is simply obeying the clearing teaching of the Bible to give to God what belongs to Him.
Gifts and offerings – After paying the tithe, there is more that we can do to further the work of the church.
Giving to the building fund – An offering above the tithe given to retire the debt on the church auditorium and to provide funds for the next phase of construction on the auditorium.
Missionary Giving – An offering above the tithe given to support the work of our world mission. Temple Baptist Church currently supports over two hundred missionaries and church planters throughout the world.
Greater Knoxville Children’s Ministry - An offering to support the outreach ministry of Temple Baptist Church to children and families in the greater Knoxville area. Every week our children’s workers minister to some two thousand families.
Temple Baptist Academy – An offering to support Christian education for children four years of age through twelfth grade. Many men have committed to give to Temple Baptist Academy and pray for the students and faculty each day.
The Crown College - An offering to support the work of The Crown College. Many of the ladies in our church support Crown College on a weekly basis with a gift and commit to pray for the college on a daily basis.

Buildings and Grounds Ministry

Our members have the opportunity to maintain and care for the buildings and grounds that the Lord has provided to us. Anyone with a mind to work is welcome to take part in this ministry.

Intercessory Prayer Ministry

A New Testament church is a praying church. Scripture teaches that God hears and answers prayer, and we encourage all members to give themselves to prayer.

Prayer Meeting

A church-wide prayer meeting is held each Monday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the Curtis Hutson Chapel. During this hour, we come together to “watch and pray.” Prayer is offered for the needs of our church family, our pastor and workers, and the work of world evangelism.

Prayer Line

You may call our prayer line (865.938.PRAY) for updates on members who are in the hospitals, and to hear the prayer requests submitted by our church family. Hospital information and prayer requests are also posted at www.templebaptistchurch.com. To submit a prayer request or to give information about hospital stays, surgeries, the death of a loved one, or funeral arrangements, please call the church office.

The Touch of Heaven on Every Home

Twice a year we look forward to receiving a visit from fellow church members for the purpose of fellowship and prayer. During this brief visit, families share their prayer requests and pray together.

24-Hour Prayer Vigil

At the conclusion of the Touch of Heaven on Every Home visitation, church members pray around the clock for the requests of fellow church members and their families gathered during the Touch of Heaven. Each member is encouraged to choose an hour to watch and pray.

Music Ministry

Music is an important part of the ministry of the church. We believe music is an offering of praise to God and an encouragement and ministry to believers. At Temple Baptist Church, you will find an emphasis on Christ-honoring music that teaches doctrinal truths and glorifies God.

Adult Choir

The adult choir is a vital part of each worship service and all special meetings. Any church member age sixteen and older may join the choir. Rehearsal begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Auditorium each Sunday.

Ministries of Outreach to Our Community

Business and Professional Ministry

The greater Knoxville area is home to more than 20,000 businesses — most within a short drive of Temple Baptist Church. To help reach these business leaders and their employees with the gospel, the business and professional people of the Temple Baptist Church family meet together to visit local businesses to establish relationships and provide helpful literature. Many local employers have requested that members of our church help them with such things as making visits to employees during hospital stays, helping employees learn English, or counseling employees and their family members. Once a month many local business and professional people gather on the campus of The Crown College. Those who attend learn more about the Lord’s work at The Crown College, Temple Baptist Church, and across the world while enjoying a delicious meal served at no cost to them.

Christian Volunteers – University of Tennessee Student Ministry

We minister to the more than 26,000 students at the University of Tennessee with specially-designed gospel literature and weekly Bible studies. Each year, all incoming freshmen receive a printed gospel presentation enclosed in their orientation packet. Transportation to and from church is provided to any student living on or near the UT campus each Sunday. Students who attend the Sunday service are invited to have lunch at the Crown College dining hall.

Teens for Christ – Public School Bible Clubs

Each week of the year we conduct gospel meetings in the public middle schools and high schools of Knox County, Boys and Girls Clubs, and at the Tennessee School for the Deaf. This ministry to teens, which began in 1991, has been greatly used to bring thousands of young people to Christ. Find a Teens for Christ Bible Club in a school near you.

Hearing-impaired Ministry

Join many Temple Baptist Church members who are learning sign language and ministering to the deaf in our community and throughout the world. Sign language classes are available to anyone who would like to learn to communicate with the deaf.  A Bible club is held at the Tennessee School for the Deaf each Wednesday evening during the school year.

Spanish-speaking Ministry

There are an increasing number of Spanish-speaking families moving into our community looking for a better way of life. Their greatest need is to receive the “abundant life” that only Jesus Christ can give them. We seek to minister to our Spanish-speaking friends through Spanish-speaking services and Bible studies, interpreters, Spanish literature, and soul winning work.

Second-Hour Bible Studies

The purpose of second-Hour Bible studies is to take the truth of God’s Word to those who live and work in the greater Knoxville area. Each week, we conduct Bible studies in homes, businesses, schools, community centers, nursing homes, and many other locations throughout our community. Find a Second-Hour Bible Study near you

International Ministry

Through the world-renowned research work done in nearby Oak Ridge, and the University of Tennessee’s flagship campus, God has truly brought the world to our doorstep. Several thousand visitors from nations throughout the world live only a short distance of our church campus. God has given us an opportunity to reach international students at the University of Tennessee with the gospel. Many professors, visiting scholars, researchers, and students have “gladly received His word,” and come to Christ.

Shepherd’s Ministry – Special Education

Compassionate church members minister to many in our community with special physical, emotional, and educational needs through visitation and Bible teaching.

Nursing Home & Senior Residence Ministry

Many times throughout the week, many workers carry the gospel message to the residents and staff of nursing homes and assisted living centers. In-house worship services and Bible studies are conducted for residents who cannot attend church. Workers volunteer their time making visits, reading, singing, conducting Bible studies, and much more.

Sunshine Ministry

Every Thursday morning, shut-in church members know to expect an encouraging visit and beautiful flowers through the Sunshine Ministry. Caring members visit in homes to strengthen and encourage shut-ins, those who are recovering from a hospital stay, or suffering from a lingering illness, as well as lonely area residents who need companionship.

Military Ministry

We are grateful to God for the freedom we have to worship God freely in the United States of America. Many brave men and women have served and have given their lives to preserve this freedom. The Military Ministry exists to remind members to pray for and encourage our military service men and women. Church members are encouraged to attend prayer meetings for soldiers and their families, send letters and emails, update military prayer displays and information, and reach area military service personnel.

Benevolence Ministry

More than 2,000 families in the greater Knoxville area are helped in Jesus’ name by the giving of food and clothing. The greatest need of these families is not for food or clothing; it is to help them to know the way of salvation in Jesus Christ and helping them to grow as Christians.

Morningside Ministry

Members take the hopeful message of the gospel of Christ to residents of area public housing and the Knox Area Rescue Mission each week through public worship services, Bible studies, and visitation.

Prison Ministry

Juvenile Detention Center Ministry

On Sunday afternoons, many of our youth workers hold services, Bible studies, and make personal visits to troubled teens held at the Richard L. Bean Juvenile Detention Facility. Many teens have come to know the Lord Jesus Christ through this ministry.

World Evangelism Ministry

Our mission is to obey the command of the Lord Jesus Christ to take the gospel to the uttermost parts of the earth. Every member of the Temple Baptist Church has the responsibility to be a part of world evangelism through prayer, giving, and going.
Christ has commanded that we pray to the Lord of the harvest, that He would send forth laborers into His harvest. Each week, church members hear reports from and are encouraged to pray for missionaries supported by Temple Baptist Church. Mailing and email addresses are listed each week in our Wednesday evening prayer sheet to provide members an opportunity to encourage missionaries with notes and letters. We support more than two hundred missionaries serving in every continent of the world and have started extension schools in Evesham, England, and in Fort Worth, Texas. The British division of Crown College and Crown Southwest offer students an opportunity to study in another part of the world and serve the Lord in those regions.

Through the scouting program, young men can achieve the core objectives of strengthening character, spiritual growth, personal fitness, good citizenship, and much more.

The Royal Sunday School Crusade

The Knoxville Children’s Sunday School exists to bring children to the Lord Jesus and to teach them to follow Him. Every Sunday a great number of workers visit in the homes of more than a thousand families to present the gospel, pray for specific needs, and offer encouragement to children and their families. Each Sunday is filled with excitement as Sunday School workers travel throughout our community to bring children to Sunday School. When children arrive at Sunday School, they are greeted by faithful teachers and workers who impart biblical instruction, character lessons, and behavioral training. Children are cared for in a safe and loving environment and are delivered safely home to their parents in the afternoon. We are grateful to God for the countless number of children and adults who have been saved through this evangelistic ministry.

New Testament Church Pioneers

Church members should pray for churches to be planted and strengthened in a particular state or one of the eight regions of our nation. Mission trips are taken periodically to help in an area where a new church is being planted or to help an established church with a special evangelistic effort.
